Parterre and formal designs
The simple clean lines and symmetry of parterres can be very pleasing and add an interesting twist to any garden. Their key to success is with the planting, which is repeated throughout the beds making a coherent pattern. Formal gardens can be easier to maintain as the low hedges and clipped topiary need yearly cuttings, but the beds should be kept weed free and any invading planting not part of the scheme needs to be removed. Parterres are ultimately about being in control of your garden, which can be ideal for some and definitely not for others!
