Cottage Gardens
The idea of a cottage garden has changed over the years, and now means a relaxed, rustic, colourful garden style which appears less tidy. Sometimes vegetables and wilder plants are mixed into the planting which creates an increasingly full display as the summer progresses, lovely autumn tones with the garden going into dormancy over the winter months. The gardens are usually constructed of small scale local pieces of stone, slate, cobbles, bricks and gravel creating winding paths, stepping stones and seating areas.
Little garden ornaments such as pots, old tin baths, arches, bird tables and pools, are dotted around which gives it a personal feel and reflects the character of the home.
This style does not necessarily need to be attached to a cottage, the look works well in a more modern setting and can be mixed into formal schemes to provide a lovely contrast.
